Art is a need to express, and despite a culture that has shunned and ignored Black artists, they have continued to create outstanding, thoughtful, and provocative work. Black art may be political, rooted in identity, focused on race and social justice, or a means of personal expression. There is no single definition of Black art, but through various media, styles, and unique perspectives, we will explore several important Black American artists with artist and professor Chris Vivas.
